The Midland Grand reborn as St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel
Building was started in 1865 on The Midland Grand Hotel and after eight years and 600 million pounds in today's funds the doors were opened in May 1873 to luxury rarely seen before in a London hotel. The Midland Grand Hotel was 'almost too grand for it's purpose' said the architect George Gilbert Scott.
Of all the spectacular public spaces in the hotel the Grand staircase may be considered the 'piece de resistance'. A sweeping double staircase lit by three stories of gothic shaped leaded windows ending with a Giottoesque painted groin vaulted ceiling, truly is the height of Victorian interior design.
