Shanghai Barbie

The flagship store for anything Barbie opened this spring in Shanghai....

Gotta love pink! Wondering if any of this will wear off on darling daughter ?
Of course she was raised on/with Barbie, it probably will not catch her this
time either but, it could be a fun spot to visit.

Located on Huai Hai Road this 35,000 sq. foot store 'expresses Barbie as a
global lifestyle'  ummmmm...... food for thought!

Today's real 'Thai Style'

Personalizing  the exterior of your home "Thai style". This is a very typical little development here in Phuket. This one the way to The Oasis houses, like this range around 3 million THB. It does make me smile how people like to make their mark......it isn't  good design but I bet it is good for the soul. To watch how hard people work to personalize their exteriors is amazing.

This is the basic model:   (Somehow not quite like the chi chi houses on most design blogs)

The garage area filled in for extra interior space and the exterior painted a VERY sunny yellow.

Here they went for a more classic decorative motif added in paint to the entry and carport columns.

Next door a multihued canopy soft tangerines and rusty brown accents...where do these schemes evolve from?

This homeowner has worked particularly hard with his multi - coloured paint scheme, window sizes and additions. 'Tis all a bit crazy but this does make me smile as we head by. Of course in very Western style developing, The Oasis is planted so the houses disappear behind walls of vegetation however the original paint scheme of all white is not allowed to be tampered with unless the homeowners group all agree. It does maintain the design integrity but I sometimes wonder just a little bit what would happen if all the owners were to let loose!

A Change of Pace

Sherrill's latest !! -- all you lucky Londoners head over before the run is up.

Courtesy of The British Theatre Guide - Women of Manhattan

By John Patrick Shanley
Old Red Lion
Review by Philip Fisher (2009)

John Patrick Shanley may well have a claim to be on the shortlist for London's most neglected living playwright. The New Yorker is best known for his film work, which includes the adaptation of his Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Doubt, starring Meryl Streep and, a generation before, Moonstruck with Cher.
He is also a fine playwright as demonstrated by this sophisticated 1986 precursor to a stream of TV series such as Sex and the City.

It may only last 75 minutes but Women of Manhattan packs in a considerable amount of wit and wisdom about sexual relationships and unusually, considering it is written by a man, does so from the feminine perspective.

Sherrill Gow's production opens in the Claire Amos-designed minimalist apartment of Texan Rhonda Louise, played by Clara Perez. She and her two best friends are each age 30 and at different places on the snakes and ladders board of man hunting.

Rhonda Louise may have kicked out the love of her life (or more likely vice versa) but is still closely attached to his old red sneakers. Cool blonde Billie (Lisa Jedan) has been happily married for three years to Sean McConaghy's dull Bob in a relationship that is tediously faithful, as both proclaim.

The focus of Rhonda Louise and Billie's attention is tiny Judy, given a finely nuanced portrayal by Kosha Engler. She has been sexily deprived for far too long and is cruelly but all too accurately labelled a fag hag as a result of her uncanny ability to attract closet and even open homosexuals.
After some witty debate and repartee, Billie decides to set Judy up with a blind date and unwisely tells each of the parties to open up and tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth - advice that she almost instantly regrets.

Duke, played by a very relaxed Victor Perez, is a surprise in more ways than one. He is black, beautiful, sophisticated and a stud in the most complimentary or derogatory sense of the word, depending upon your views on sexual profligacy. The date starts frosty but soon hots up and the consequences are both cheering and amusing.

The women retrench for debrief in the fourth and final scene, where enough home truths are revealed to make this into a very high quality drama about sexual politics that manages to combine humour with insight to great effect.

Since it is so hard to see any plays by John Patrick Shanley in London, the wise should rush along to the Angel to catch this delightful comedy before its short run ends.

Spoiled at Sunday Lunch

Yesterday friends who are just completing their home on truly one of the most idyllic spots on the island of Phuket had us for the perfect leisurely lunch.... it was a fabulous Sunday afternoon!

For now we 'll just tease with glimpses, when it's finished I can't wait to do a full photo journal!

Spoiled we are!

Loy Krathong Festival

It is already here today! What with all the posts I was reading about Halloween, I forgot what was happening right in my own backyard.

Loy Krathong is held every year on the full moon of twelfth lunar month, it always seems to arrive just after the monsoon winds change direction and the rains lessen. We are all celebrating Loy Krathong throughout Thailand today. “Loy” is a raft made of section of banana tree trunk, beautifully and elaborately decorated with folded banana leaves, flowers, candles, and three-incense sticks. People either construct their own or purchase them at the many roadside stands that pop up for the day. You make a wish, light the candles and joss sticks and launch the little rafts out to sea or down the river.

Tonight under the full moon, many people will release a small raft like this on a river or into the sea. In addition, fireworks and beauty contests take place during the festival. All the girls and women are dressed in  very elaborate traditional dress. The floating away of the candle raft is symbolic of letting go of all one’s grudges, sins, anger and defilements, then one can start life afresh on a better foot.

Small notes are often attached as offerings:

Red Dot Design Winner - Breathing Chair

I am wondering how Kelly Wearstler would use this chair? I'm imagining a hotel lobby sprinkled with 'Breathing Chairs'. Vincent Wolf should perhaps consider a new addition to his chair collection, while some of Axel Vervoordt's style  could perhaps dare I say it, be just a little edgier with this sculptural addition. The breathing chair is designed by Yu - Ying Wu of Tawain. Yu has just been awarded a "Red Dot Design Award" for home furniture. She is a graduate of the Industrial Design program at Tatung University in Taiwan. Some have likened it to a square of Tofu. I hope she finds a manufacturing partner soon.

The hollow "breathing chair" is square

The "breathing chair" is square when unoccupied.

The "breathing chair" can "transform" into an armchair suitable for sitting on

The "breathing chair" becomes an armchair when a person sits on it. It adjusts to size.
