Laos and Their Monks

Theravada Buddhism is widely practiced in Laos. Traditionally every Lao Buddhist male will spend some time in the monastery. In times gone by this was the only schooling available to young men in addition to making merit for the family.
Monks are respected and treated with reverence by the people of Laos.
Around 6:30 each morning in Luang Prabang monks from the 34 temples walk the quiet streets with their begging bowls collecting their food for the day. The devout Buddhists of the city line the road with offerings ranging from rice to mangos.
